Titans tame Wildcats for PAC win

Titans extend their win streak as Sectional play draws near

The Gibson Southern football team moved to 6-1 on the season after defeating the Mount Vernon Wildcats 54-6. The Titans put up 21 points in the first quarter after three passing touchdowns to junior Isaac O’Neal and seniors Rory Helsley and Kaden Hurless.

“The first two scores following the three and out set the tone for how the rest of the game would go,” sophomore Mason Scheller said.

In the second quarter, senior quarterback Brady Allen threw two touchdowns to senior Adrean Lukeman to extend the lead.

The defense held the Wildcats scoreless in the first half, with a score of 34-0 going into the third quarter.

“The defense came up big,” said sophomore running back Sean Delong. “Holding the defense scoreless helped the offense feel more comfortable, enabling them to make more plays.”

In the second half, the Titans continued to run up the score with two rushing touchdowns from Lukeman as well as another rushing touchdown from senior D.J. Roberts. The team was confident going into the game after halftime.

“We had a very comfortable lead, and JV went in after the first drive in the second half,” Delong said.

The junior varsity players went into the game shortly after halftime. They wanted to make sure to maintain their lead. Throughout the rest of the game, the Wildcats were held to just six points.

Allen completed 22-35 passes, with 366 total yards with five total touchdowns.

The Titans’ head coach, Nick Hart, is focused on preparing the team for next Friday.

“We will work hard in practice and continue to get better,” Hart said. “They will continue to run the offense and keep doing what they’ve been doing all season long.”

The Titans look to extend their winning streak to four on Friday, Oct. 8, when the team travels north to in-county rival Princeton.
