April Maikranz is the new cafeteria manager at Gibson Southern High School. She joined the Titan staff last October. Maikranz enjoys her job, especially the people that she works with. In her free time, she loves to read books of all kinds.

Southerner: What makes a “good day” at school?
Maikranz: “I really enjoy being here. These ladies are very funny. So, that makes a good day at school.”
Southerner: If you won the lottery and decided to give up your job, what would you do?
Maikranz: “I would really like to just travel.”
Southerner: If you were to be given a superlative in school, what would it have been?
Maikranz: “I think maybe I’m just a more positive person.”
Southerner: Are you married? How many kids do you have?
Maikranz: “I’m married to Craig Maikranz and have five children.”
Southerner: How did you meet your husband?
Maikranz: “Middle school, sixth grade at Fort Branch.”
Southerner: What is your biggest pet peeve?
Maikranz: “Negativity.”
Southerner: What is your favorite school lunch to make?
Maikranz: “There are things I know kids like that require a little more effort, but you know nothing is really difficult to make.”
Southerner: What inspires you?
Maikranz: “I like it when you can tell kids are having a good day. Before I came here, I worked at the grade school. Even on days with little kids, they were overly excited and happy. I was kind of concerned when I came out here and transitioned to older kids, but it’s still the same. You see happy kids, it really does lift you up and make your day feel better.”
Southerner: What is one thing you would tell your younger self?
Maikranz: “To just pick and find things that make you happy. Don’t do things because this is what you should be doing. Find things that are going to bring the contentment and happiness to you.”
Southerner: What is the worst thing about working in the cafeteria?
Maikranz: “I always feel bad for C line kids when we run out of stuff. I hate that because I know it happens frequently enough.”
Southerner: What is the best thing about working in the cafeteria?
Maikranz: “It’s just a really good environment; those ladies are just wonderful. We just have a really good time back there.”
Southerner: Out of A, B and C lunch, which one do you like to serve the best?
Maikranz: “C has the least amount of kids, so it’s the easiest. It’s the last lunch of the day, so it’s good to be done.”
Southerner: What movie scared you to death as a kid?
Maikranz: “They made ‘It’ into a TV series back when I was really little, and it was really creepy. Now, it is really cheesy when you see it.”
Southerner: What are some of your pet peeves during lunch time?
Maikranz: “I really can’t think of anything. It would really have to be something bad because those things don’t just happen.”
Southerner: How do you spend your summer breaks?
Maikranz: “The kids take up a lot of the time.”
Southerner: What is one thing you can cook to perfection?
Maikranz: “The kids like when I make lasagna and when I make chicken strips, but my own chicken strips.”
Southerner: What was your favorite class in high school?
Maikranz: “Mr. Bengert taught a sociology class, and I loved that class.”
Southerner: What is a typical Saturday night like?
Maikranz: “If the kids don’t have anything going on, then it’s just boring and at home.”
Southerner: What is your favorite way to spend a day off?
Maikranz: “I love to read, so if I could have a book and read and be alone. If I could just sit and read a book, I would be happy.”
Southerner: What is your favorite book?
Maikranz: “I like all across the board. I like nonfiction to fiction. I like all areas.”
Southerner: What was your very first job you had?
Maikranz: “I worked at Haub’s Steak House as a table busser when I was in high school.”
