On Sept. 12, the Lady Titan volleyball team competed against Wood Memorial, hosted by Trojans in Oakland City. The ladies knew it was going to be a tough match.
“We had scrimmaged Wood Memorial over the summer a few times, so we were well aware it would be a good match up,” volleyball head coach Jeni Gray said. “I knew we would have to play good solid volleyball to come out with the win.”
The girls started off winning a close set, 25-21. The second set was also a battle but Gibson Southern took the win, 26-24. The Lady Titans were up by two sets and hoped to finish it in the third. In the third, the Lady Trojans stepped up their game, winning the set 25-17 and making it 2-1 .
“As a team, we made a lot of errors, and we just couldn’t get out of it,” senior Gabby Smitha said. “Our mindsets weren’t very good after so many errors.”
During the fourth set, Wood Memorial won again, forcing the girls into a fifth and final set.
“We have to get better at playing as a team, and that is exactly what I told them going into the fifth set,” Gray said. “I see glimpses of it, but we have to execute the entire match as a team.” The Lady Titans narrowly came out on top for the win, taking the final set 15-11.
“We honestly didn’t think we should have been going into the fifth set with Wood and really just wanted to win, so we came out ready to fight and get the game over with,” senior Makenna Turner said.
Senior Abby Deal ended the game with 16 kills, and senior Gabby Smitha had 12 kills.
The girls play next on Sept. 25, at South Spencer for a conference game. The girls are slated to start at 7 p.m.
