On Saturday, September 14, the 4-5 Lady Titan volleyball team took on the 5-10 Harrison Warriors at the Evansville Central Invitational. The Titans won the match in three sets. At this particular invitational, only three sets were played. As they faced off a mere five days prior, the Titans and Warriors were familiar with each other.
“After every game, I try to emphasize what they did well or what they could have learned from each game, and they applied that to the Harrison game and got it done in three sets,” said Gibson Southern head volleyball coach Sabrina Yamashita.
According to the stats, this game was a team effort. However, the Titans were led by senior Lauryn Adamson, sophomore Edie Helfrich and sophomore Addy Snow. Snow transferred to Gibson Southern from Central High School. Adamson collected eight digs and seven perfects. Helfrich had 11 digs and nine perfects. Snow, the stats leader, put up four aces, seven digs, and 15 perfects. Each played a key part in the win.
Adamson felt the team was not at its best, but they still stuck together to pull out the win.
“I think us coming together as a team [contributed to the win],” senior volleyball player Lauryn Adamson said. “We did not play very well, but we stuck together and made the rough plays work. We fought and we stuck through it and won together.”
The Titans lost the first set 25-16, but they were able to win the last two sets. The second set was 25-18 and the third was 15-6. The Titans beat the Warriors in three sets earlier in the week, playing the best three out of five.
“I feel we all played well together and had good energy to keep us up!” sophomore volleyball player Edie Helfrich said.
The Titans were focused and played with confidence to secure the win, with lots of positive takeaways from the game.
“I am very proud they won and got it done in three sets,” Yamashita said. “They were focused through the whole game, and they were not going to let up until they won. They played with a lot of confidence and took control of the game when the ball was on their side.”
The Titans went on to win the invitational with a four-win day. The girls are back in action tonight at Gibson Southern, as they take on the North Huskies.
