The Gibson Southern High School Titan boys’ tennis team secured a victory against its rivals, the Princeton Tigers, with a score of 4 to 1. This game was especially important because playing the rival team, made the win even more special for the Titans.
“I feel like our guys came out ready to play,” head coach Kyle DeBord said. “They played strongly and managed a win four out of the five matches.”
In the singles matches, the boys’ hard work paid off, and they were able to win most of their matches.
“The two single spot was a highlight just because of how close the match was,” DeBord said. “The only score that was close was at two singles. They were in the two singles spot last year, and those two guys battled it out last year for the sectional championship.”
The doubles teams swept the floor with the Tigers, winning all of their matches
Despite the win, the Titans were able to identify areas that still need improvement before postseason play.
“We can easily clean up a few unforced errors,” DeBord said. “The more we can keep the ball going over the net, the better. We can also increase our first serve percentage to make it easier for ourselves.”
Any win is better than a loss, but a win over Princeton was even more special for the boys.
“This was a big match because they beat the school rivals,” DeBord said.
The Titans travel to South Spencer to take on the Rebels this Thursday.
