Guys, come on. I mean, she is kind of good, but not that good. Taylor Swift is an American singer and songwriter who is one of the most popular and most praised artists of all time. At just 17 years old, Swift hit the Number 1 spot on the Top 100 Country Songs list with her song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” From 2006 to 2024, Swift has released 15 albums, and millions of people swoon over her. I do not understand it. She has some good songs from back in the day, but the entirety of her 2024 album, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology,” was boring, yet it remained on the Billboard’s Top Albums list for 29 weeks. Other than pulling out one or two nostalgic Taylor Swift songs at dances or family gatherings, she has zero interesting craft, and she should be put back in the attic until the next party.
Taylor has no originality. Name a single song of hers that is not about a toxic relationship. Around 81% of her music is found to be about relationships, and times when she experimented with other ideas, the songs did not gain attention. Name a newer song of hers that stands out amongst the past and present music industry. Real musicians can write music about anything and are constantly trying to break the boundaries of sound, while she continues to make the exact same basic songs for more than a decade about the exact same things and people are obsessed. Die-hard Swifties are the people who go to Taco Bell every day for lunch, see the new Cantina Chicken Taco, and even though they think they might like it, they get chicken tenders instead because that is what they get every day.
After some research, I found that between all 300+ songs that Taylor has released, around 70% of all of her works are in the same exact five keys. In an astonishing 21 of her songs, she uses the exact same chord progression! This is like listening to the same song on repeat. If you do listen to her music, it is recognizable that she sings the exact same tone, tone patterns and volume in almost all of her songs. I even found her songs to be so repetitive I felt like I could predict the future of the song. I do not understand how this repetitive musical behavior has taken the world by storm while there are countless other musicians putting way more into their work.
You can hear real musical talent through other female artists, such as Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter, who are both incredibly better than Swift. Eilish and Carpenter have each released albums this year that can sum up their extraordinary musical potential. Eilish’s album “Hit Me Hard and Soft” has deep, emotional, beautiful music that guaranteed its spot as a Grammy nominee for Album of the Year, while Carpenter earned a spot as well with her flawless, catchy album “Short n’ Sweet.” Take a listen to Eilish’s songs like “Skinny,” then listen to Taylor’s “loml.” Tell me who has the better voice. Listen to Eilish’s “Wildflower,” then listen to Taylor’s “Fortnight.” Listen to Carpenter’s “Please Please Please,” then listen to Swift’s “Down Bad.” Similar vibes of songs, but Carpenter’s is 100 times more enjoyable. I do not know how people could see this any differently.
Furthermore, Swift loves to scam you guys, and data continues to prove that she is a selfish narcissist. Her tickets cost range from $615 – $3,000+. Carpenter’s tickets have been known to range from $150 – $250. Eilish’s tickets range from $180 -$200. Heck, if you want to have a wild time, Ice Spice tickets are only $50 – $80. Swift got with Travis Kelce for attention, and the fact that she is still in a healthy relationship might mean she will run out of song ideas soon. Every time Swift is taken out of the spotlight, she re-releases the same songs in a different version, and people go crazy over the same exact songs that they went crazy over before. Then, collectors feel the need to buy new vinyls, new merchandise or CDs, all for the same songs in a different color or font. She did this with four separate albums. Think of all the money she made when she remade the same songs.
If you like Taylor Swift, that is okay. You do you. I like a couple of her songs as well, but there are way better musicians who deserve the fame and glory. I could write a book on how overvalued she is; these are just some of the basics. Other musicians put in way more work. Other musicians do not try to squeeze you dry of your money. Other musicians make better music. One of these other musicians should be your favorite musician. Taylor Swift is not that good.
