The Gibson Southern Lady Titan soccer team hosted the Mt. Vernon Lady Wildcats in a Pocket Athletic Conference matchup. It was senior night for the Titans, and the class of 2026 was looking to achieve one final home conference win.
“Being a part of the team has given me some of my best friends,” senior captain Corinne Stevens said. “It has taught me that hard work pays off, and I have loved being a part of this team for the past four years.“
The Titans fielded a whole lineup of seniors, including Kenzie Shellhas who had her season cut short due to injury.
The starting whistle blew and Stevens kicked the ball out of bounds immediately, so Shellhas could exit the field to a standing ovation. Then, the game was underway.
The Wildcats started the scoring with a goal from senior Ella Sponn to get an early lead, 1-0 . Just four minutes later, Lady Titan senior Mabrey Wilson tapped in the equalizer to tie the score.
As more time ticked off the clock, the Lady Titans were starting to see what they have been working on in practice showing in game.
“I feel like we connected well and played well,” senior captain Lainey Cloin said. “We have been practicing possessing the ball, and we definitely did that well tonight.”
The work paid off when Cloin scored the second goal for the Lady Titans, giving them a 2-1 advantage with about 20 minutes left in the first half.
The girls continued to possess the ball throughout the half, and the Wildcats did not seem to have any answers.
Just ten minutes into the second half, Stevens padded the lead for the Lady Titans. Then, following a 20-minute scoring drought, Stevens just about put the nail in the coffin with her second goal of the night.
From going down 1-0 early to scoring four unanswered goals, head coach Sylvia Sellers was pleased with the ladies’ performances.
“We have trailed against some good teams this season,” Sellers said. “But, the girls kept their head high and answered quickly.”
In the dying minutes of the game, Stevens scored her third goal of the night, completing the hat trick. The final buzzer sounded minutes later, and the Lady Titans came away with a 5-1 victory.
The girls are back in action on September 25 to take on the Pike Central Chargers.
