The Lady Titan volleyball team was too much for the Lady Trojans of Wood Memorial. On September 16, the 14-4 volleyball team won all three sets: 25-18, 25-15 and 25-15, extending the Lady Titans win column.
“At first, it was a little rocky because we are on a pretty big high from our 12-game win streak,” junior volleyball player Edie Helfrich said. “We just weren’t playing up to our potential, but we got there eventually.”
Even though the Titans led by seven in the first set, volleyball coach Paige Rohrer and Helfrich felt the Titans started slow in the game, but eventually got back into their groove.
“I think we got off to a slow start last night, but then the girls came together and started playing up to our level rather than the competition,” Rohrer said.
After the first set, the Titans went 25-15 for the next two sets to win the match. A key factor in the win was the team’s ability to adapt to the Wood Memorial Trojans’ play style.
“We started covering tips and some cut shots that their hitters were making by the end of the game,” Roher said. “Adjusting our defense to counter the style of play by the other team is something that we have been working on this year.”
Senior Jaylie Johnson felt that the team did well but lacked intensity. There was one other area of improvement she noticed, too.
“We did good, but we didn’t play with energy at times,” Johnson said. “Being able to adjust during a game and recognize what the other team is doing quicker is something I want to improve on.”
Helfrich believed that she should work on her hustle to the ball and her footwork.
“Working faster on my feet and hustling to the ball is definitely something I want to improve on,” Helfrich said.
Johnson is the only senior on the Lady Titans volleyball team, leaving her with mixed emotions. She likes the responsibility that comes with it but misses her old teammates in her grade.
“It’s good because I get more time with all the other girls, and my responsibility has gone up,” Johnson said. “It’s sad because there are no other girls in my grade.”
The Titans face the South Spencer Rebels on Monday, September 29.
