Most students are familiar with the Student Council as a school group that organizes events. To help pay for the many activities, there is always a need for fundraisers. They added a shoe drive to start the academic year.
“I don’t think that we’ve done one quite like the shoe drive,” said senior Student Council President Olivia Alston. “It’s different in the aspect of being a fundraiser for us because if we collect a large number of shoes, the company gives us money. So, it’s a fundraiser for us, but the students don’t have to spend money. So, that’s the cool thing, because everybody has old shoes.”
Each class had a specific week scheduled for their grade to bring in used shoes of all brands, qualities, sizes and colors.
Seniors had the first week of donating shoes. The donation began on August 18, 2025, and ended on August 22, 2025. The seniors brought in a total of 42 pairs of shoes.
Juniors participated during week two, which began on August 25, 2025, and ended on August 29, 2025. Juniors brought in a total of 102 pairs of shoes.
Sophomores had the third week. It began on September 2, 2025, and ended on September 5, 2025. The sophomores brought in a total of 272 pairs of shoes.
Week four was the freshmen’s week for donating, and it began on September 15, 2025, and ended on September 19, 2025. Freshmen brought in a total of 313 pairs of shoes.
The fifth and final week was the staff’s assigned week for donating their used shoes. It began on September 22, 2025, and the very last day of the entire shoe collection was on September 26, 2025. The Staff brought in a total of 267 pairs of shoes.
The goal for this fundraiser was to collect shoes for countries in need. One bag contains 25 pairs of shoes, and the goal was to fill 100 bags.
If the drive could fill one hundred or more bags, then the school would make money from the organization, and they would not have to pay for the shoes to be shipped to the countries in need.
According to Kara Martin, one of the Gibson Southern Student Council co-sponsors, the total number of shoes collected was 996 pairs.
