The Gibson Southern junior varsity boys soccer team took a first-game loss to the North Huskies’ top junior varsity team at the Harrison tournament on Saturday, September 13. The team’s first match started at 9 a.m. against the North High School top JV team. The Titans lost 9-0. The Huskies communication skills and passing game made it difficult for Gibson Southern to compete with them.
“The Huskies are just a straight-up good team,” defensive mid sophomore Alex Atkins said.
The Titans had a break for a couple of hours before playing again at 1 p.m. Their next matchup was against the North Huskies’ second JV team.
During this game, freshman attacking mid Nico Valencia had a chance to get the team back into the game with a penalty kick, but he missed. The boys fell for the second time in the day, 2-0.
“We need to focus on passing the ball and defending,” freshman Evan Shackelford said.
At the Harrison tournament, there were 10 teams that participated in the event, where the North High School JV second team ended up taking home the victory.
It seemed like a bad weekend for the team on paper, according to coach Andrew Dunkle.
“The Harrison JV tournament was a good tournament to see how far our JV team has come,” he said. “This is our first time to have a JV team in more than five years. Even though we didn’t get the results we wanted, the boys put out great effort and played really well.”
Dunkle said this was a learning opportunity and a good way to measure themselves for the future.
“Our players were able to keep up with two strong opposing teams and showed us that the future is bright for Titan soccer,” he said.
