Part way into the school year, students and staff noticed a new bulletin board hanging upstairs in the English hallway.
After the board was ordered through the school, maintenance installed it for English teachers to use, with their visions in mind.
This board will feature students’ work to draw attention to their commitment and will have informative information for new students coming in.
“I just wanted something where we could display some of the work done by our students,” English teacher Elizabeth Elpers said.
The Advanced Composition students’ work was posted after their first narrative assignment of the semester.
The original plan was to have two students from each composition class mentioned and placed on the board for one week. After Elpers read through and graded the narratives, she had trouble making her selection.
“My initial plan was to only pick my two favorites, and the problem was that I had a lot more favorites,” Elpers said.
Junior Audrey Spindler wrote one of the essays posted on the board. She wrote this essay over her win at a local fair. She was excited when she received an email asking if it was okay for her essay to be posted.
“I was really excited, and I thought it was cool to see someone else think my essay was good,” Spindler said.
She looks forward to continuing to write in her class and is glad the board is drawing attention to individuals in the hallway.
Another essay posted on the board was written by junior Madeline Waters. She wrote her narrative about her emergency appendix surgery. At first, she was shocked when Elpers asked her to post her essay in the hallway. She felt honored that Elpers saw so much potential in her writing. She is also excited to continue writing for her, as it is definitely a challenging course.
“This is kind of like an honor,” Waters said.
The next work that will be posted will be to celebrate Halloween with students’ writing pieces.
“We are going to do some sort of Halloween type display [with] writing pieces,” Elpers said.
As the school year continues, students and staff can be on the lookout for more information and interesting content.
