The Student Council’s annual Halloween Costume Contest was held on Friday, October 31, and was a little bit different compared to past years.
“One of the big changes this year is that the whole school will be able to come and watch,” Student Council President Olivia Alston said. “In the past, if you wanted to be part of the contest, you would leave your class for ten minutes, and we would meet in the hall.”
A big part of Halloween is dressing up and going out with friends or family to get candy and have a good time. The Student Council has been hosting its annual costume contest for some time now to show those who think they are too old to take part in the festivities that they are never too old to dress up and have a good time.
“Halloween is something that we all grew up doing, and I think in high school, some people start to think they are too cool to dress up,” Alston said. “I think the contest was a way to show that it is still fun to dress up.”
Along with getting the students involved in the contest, it is equally important to have the teachers and staff involved. They can dress up, some will judge the costumes and a few will do both.
“Some teachers who will be judging are Mr. Bledsoe, Mrs. Russell, Mr. Grigsby and Mr. Susott,” Alston said. Science teacher Jane Toth was also among the panel of judges.
The judges had a lot to consider and take in when it came time to judge the different categories. The group had to remain fair and objective with their choices.
“We looked at all the students dressed in each category,” contest judge Laura Russell said. “We had to keep in mind that there was an overall winner that could not win from an individual group.”
From the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the Subway Surfers to an inflated bathtub, a wide variety of costumes were on display for the contest. Some costumes were more detailed than others, and some were more obscure, like sophomore Kaiden Becker’s Tyler Durden from the movie “Fight Club.”In the end, the judges selected senior Eric Narruhn as the best overall costume. He spent lots of time creating a unique marionette outfit.
“Marionette was not the first idea for a costume,” Narruhn said. “The original costume I picked was not really school-appropriate, so I decided to be a marionette.”
There were four other winners:
Funniest – Senior Devin Bane, Old Granny
Most Creative – Senior Heath McMichael, Clark Kent / Superman
Best Duo – Seniors Ashley Martin and Landon Taylor, How to Train Your Dragon
Best Group – Sophomores Madeline Deputy, Laylah Pegram and Summer Sprinkle, Willy Wonka
Best Staff – Ryan Osborn, 6 / 7
