Gibson Southern basketball paused by COVID-19

COVID-19 has put a damper on many plans during 2020. Many events such as March Madness and the college baseball season are included among these. The Gibson Southern boy’s basketball team managed to go a full week without and quarantine victims, taking precautions within their practices to avoid this.

“Practices are more group based or done with patterns in order to minimize the contact tracing. Which in turn makes you constantly go against someone of equal skill, to better both players, and not have a point guard against a big man,” sophomore Jackson Redding said.

Although thus far only four players have had to be quarantined home workouts have started to come into effect. Coach Runyan has provided home workouts for the players on days that they can not come to practice, but some players are taking matters into their own hands.

“Outside of practice, I’m looking to always get in the gym at Bob’s or shoot outside on my goal in the driveway. Since we are in season, I don’t want to take a day off of shooting,” junior Carson Brindle said.  “I usually try to get a couple hundred shots up and do small simple ball handling drills just so I don’t lose a step until we can get back in the gym.”

The IHSAA(Indiana High School Athletic Association) has provided many ideas for each team within the state to combat the virus during the season. These include maintaining social distancing when permissible, wearing masks during pre game and warm-ups, and suspending pre/post game handshakes. Aside from this each coach is advised to provide precautionary measures by themselves.

We have continued to look at ways to practice social distancing while practicing basketball.  Wearing masks when we are doing non-strenuous activities. Keeping our 3 teams apart as much as possible,” Head Coach Kyle Runyan said.

Gibson Southern’s annual scrimmage against Vincennes Rivet set for November 24th has been cancelled. They will play their first game against the Jasper Wildcats on Friday, December 4th at 6:00 p.m.
