Opportunities and friendships, the cornerstones to newspaper

The connections made while in newspaper made the class and years so much more fun.

As I am approaching the end of this chapter of my life, I am reflecting on the past four years. They have flown by, just like everyone told me they would. It is bittersweet to know that I only have a limited number of times that I will be considered a student at Gibson Southern. I am grateful for all of the opportunities I have gotten and for all my friends and the faculty for pushing me to be my best and for believing in me.

Newspaper has definitely been the class I look forward to the most, not because of the writing but because of the friendships I was able to form. Last year, we decided to make “The Southerner” more modern and moved it online. By being online, it is easier access to people who can’t get to school to pick up a copy, and next year when I am at Indiana University, I am excited to check back and be able to see what everyone is up to.

To Logan, Hannah, Sydney and Marissa: Thank you for being such great photographers and bearing with my last minute photo requests and for making photoshops with me.

To Belle, Payton and Dillon: Thank you all for being the best people to play games with. I have faith that Payton will be a fantastic editor and that she will keep everyone in line. Your memes never fail to put a smile on my face, and the daily waves as I walk into class are phenomenal. Dillon, your artistic ability is unique and such a great asset to our paper, and I am so glad you decided to join the newspaper.

To Grigs: Thank you for giving me creative freedom in this class and allowing me to grow as a writer. From being an English teacher to newspaper teacher to Student Council advisor, we have spent a lot of time together the past four years. Without you, my experience here at Gibson Southern would not have been the same. As I reflect back, I am grateful for the opportunity to be managing editor as well as recording secretary for the Student Council. I would also like to thank you for writing me letters of recommendation on such short notice.

Although COVID has made the last year difficult, it has left me with some of the best memories. I will forever be grateful for the people at Gibson Southern, but I am so ready to move to Bloomington with my best friend.
