Martin assumes role as Gibson Southern librarian
Kara Martin is starting her first year as Gibson Southern’s new librarian but previously worked at Holy Cross Catholic School in Ft. Branch as an aide. She is a Gibson Southern High School alumnus. Martin also attended the University of Southern Indiana for two years and then Indiana State University for two years.

Southerner: What made you want to become a teacher
Martin: “I’ve worked with kids for a long time, and I always wanted to be a teacher since I was in first grade.”
Southerner: How do you spend your summer breaks?
Martin: “I have four kids, so I usually spend it at the baseball field and basketball court.”
Southerner: What makes a ‘good day’ at school?
Martin: “Whenever I have plenty to do to keep me busy and when everyone is quiet in study hall.”
Southerner: What inspires you?
Martin: “I would say my mom because I have grown up watching her work hard and take care of her family, and I try to do the same now for my own family.”
Southerner: What’s a school sport or activity you enjoy watching?
Martin: “We go to pretty much all the football games, basketball games and baseball. We try to support every chance we can.”
Southerner: What’s the best or worst thing about being a teacher?
Martin: “The best thing is getting to know the kids and creating relationships with the co-workers and getting to know everyone around school.”
Southerner: What is your favorite memory from school?
Martin: “I would say all of the dances and going to the football games with my friends and also the basketball games. The girls’ basketball team made it to state, and I went to everything. That was a fun experience to be a part of.”
Southerner: Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by?
Martin: “Everything happens for a reason.”
Southerner: What is your favorite way to spend a day off?
Martin: “Just relaxing at home with nothing to do.”
Southerner: What is your bucket list destination?
Martin: “I would say Hawaii is one place I have always wanted to travel to and check out.”
Southerner: Who is your personal hero?
Martin: “My parents are my personal heroes.”
Southerner: How do you recover from a bad day?
Martin: “I try to take at least five minutes to myself in peace and quiet.”
Southerner: What is your favorite TV show or Netflix series?
Martin: “I love to watch ‘One Tree Hill.’”
Southerner: Have you lived in Gibson County your whole life?
Martin: “Yes, besides living away for college, I have lived in Gibson County my whole life. I was born and raised in Haubstadt but have lived in Ft. Branch for the last 14 years.”
Southerner: Do you have any kids and if so how old are they?
Martin: “My husband, Trent, and I have four kids, three boys and one girl. Jaxon is 11 and in the sixth grade, Keagan is nine and in fourth grade, Cayson is five and in kindergarten and Jacey is four and in preschool.”
