On Friday, Oct. 26, the Gibson Southern Titans traveled to Washington to take on the Hatchets in the semi-final of Sectional 30. This was an important game for both teams – one team would move on to the Sectional championship and the other team’s season would end. The Titans started out hot, scoring a rushing touchdown from senior Sean DeLong.
“Our offense played very consistently and did a good job of getting the ball up the field,” DeLong said.
Following the rushing touchdown were three receiving touchdowns from sophomore Gunner Alexander, DeLong and junior Cam Novotny. On defense sophomore Brody Klem had four sacks along with an interception from sophomore Zach Foster. On the special team side, senior Mason Scheller scored off a pick six. Scheller thought the defense had many clutch moments.
“I thought our defense played very well and sound,” Scheller said. “A lot of our guys made crucial plays.”
Along with that, DeLong scored a punt return touchdown. Heading the offense was senior quarterback Tanner Boyd who went 9 of 14 throwing for 146 yards and three touchdowns.
Head coach Nick Hart felt the Titans did well on offense and got the job done.
“I thought offensively we executed at a high level and were very efficient on that side of the ball,” Hart said.
The first half was one sided with the Titans coming out on top with a score of 48-7. The game remained calm in the second half with the Hatchets only scoring one touchdown. This put an end to Washington’s season and advanced the Titans to the Sectional championship. The final score was 48-14.
“I thought overall we played well and did a good job,” Hart said.
The Titans got to this game by beating the Mount Vernon Wildcats in the first round of Sectional at The Jewell. This was also a one-sided game with the Titans winning with a final score of 40-7. Hart believes there is one key thing to winning big games.
“Just execution,” Hart said. “To win a big game, you have to execute at a very high level.”
The Titans will take on the Alices of Vincennes on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023.
