Social media frees pop star from “Toxic” conservatorship
Jamie Spears no longer in control of his daughter’s life
Britney Spears, the 40-year-old pop star of the 90s and early 2000s, was recently freed from her conservator, her father, Jamie Spears. After 13 years of being under her father’s control, Britney is now able to move on from the constricting relationship and hopefully regain control of her own life.
A conservator is someone who takes care of or manages the finances of an adult who is deemed unfit to manage themselves. Jamie has been Britney’s conservator since 2008. She was not doing well at the time, and her iconic shaved head from 2007 was an indicator of this. Britney’s trip to the psychiatric ward in 2008 led to Jamie being put in charge of Britney’s finances, estate and person.
In 2019, Jamie was no longer in charge of Britney’s person but still had control over her estate.
Just recently, the “Free Britney” movement was sparked to remove Jamie as Britney’s conservator. Britney is an adult woman with an immensely successful career who has longed to be in charge of her own life for years. Jamie has controlled her for 13 years now, making decisions for Britney without her getting any opinion in the matter. While he was a conservator, Jamie was practically stealing from Britney’s wealth. Jamie pocketed $16,000 a month as a salary, while only giving Britney $8,000 a month.
With the public’s support, Britney went to court to have Jamie removed as her conservator. Luckily, the pressure from her fans led Jamie to step down, and gives some hope to Britney’s freedom. However, a temporary conservator was put in place until future decisions could be made.
On November 12, Britney had a court date that officially ended her conservatorship. Britney was very happy to be out of the constricting relationship with her father, and celebrated on social media after the decision was made. “What an amazing weekend… I felt like I was on cloud 9 the whole time!!!,” Spears posted on Instagram. “I actually got my first glass of champagne at the most beautiful restaurant I’ve ever seen last night!!!! I’m celebrating my freedom and my B-day for the next two months !!!!!!!!!!! I mean after 13 years … I think I’ve waited long ENOUGH!!!!”
The fans agree.
Now that Jamie is out of the picture, we hope that Britney can finally enjoy her life, living by her own rules.
