The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a significant advantage over the rest of the MLB for multiple years now, which has now helped them win two national championships in a row. The problem is that the Dodgers have much more money than any other team, which allows them to get any player that they desire. In 2024, the Dodgers made one of the most expensive deals in all of MLB history with a $700 million contract to Shohei Ohtani, which should take a giant part of the team’s salary. Instead, they had Ohtani defer to get his money until the end of his contract, which is in 2033. Therefore, this allows the Dodgers to continue to acquire other players they want because they do not have to pay the biggest contract on their roster until 2033.
The Dodgers have spent a total of $1.59 billion on free agency since 2020; they are easily in first place. Second place on this list is the New York Yankees, who trail by a margin of $480 million, and that’s just the team in second place. The team in last place is the Baltimore Orioles, that has spent more than $1 billion less dollars in free agency than the Dodgers since 2020. This shows how unfair the amount of money that the Dodgers can spend is. They are like the big brother of the MLB and are picking on every other team because they do not have any money compared to them.
Another reason why the Dodgers have all this money to spend is that they operate under a unique, highly profitable TV deal negotiated following a 2013 bankruptcy filing, allowing them to retain roughly $150 million more in revenue compared to other teams in the MLB.
In addition to their unfair amount of revenue that they get, they also have the largest stadium with the highest capacity, which allows them to obtain even more money for them to go on their unfair spending sprees in free agency. While some people believe that the Dodgers were just smart, and they are just a good team with good coaching, that is the reason they won two consecutive national championships. Some people would strongly disagree and think that the Dodgers are playing baseball fairly, and that they did actually deserve both of their championships. I think they were bought instead of won.
