For the 2025-2026 season, the Gibson Southern baseball team added two new additions to the coaching staff: new head junior varsity head coach Michael Moore and pitching coach Alex Gordon. Last year, the varsity baseball team went 22-8 overall and 11-1 in the conference; however, the season ended in the Sectional championship, losing to Jasper by one run. With the new coaching additions, hopefully, they can improve this season and make it past the Sectional.
Both coaches have backgrounds in baseball and know the game well. Moore has been a licensed Indiana High School Athletic Association and Babe Ruth umpire for more than 20 years and has coached several baseball and softball teams during his military career, as well as playing All Army Softball. Gordon also knows the intricacies of baseball, having played two years at Wabash Valley College and two more years playing at Murray State University. Both coaches have different ways they will help the baseball program.
“Every player is different, and there is not a one-size-fits-all approach that’s going to work for every player,” Gordon said. “Most players aren’t going to play in the MLB, but the things that you learn playing the game prepare you for life.”
Moore will continue to teach and reinforce what coach Bobby Segal has built into the program.
With both of these coaching tactics, Gordon and Moore will help the team. The players already think highly of the new coaches after being with them during the first few weeks of practices and find them to be good additions to the program.
“I believe that the pitching coach can really help build a very deep pitching staff for our team and help every player improve significantly and develop over time to their best self,” sophomore baseball player Jake Tichenor said. “I also believe Michael Moore can help the younger players in our program work to get to the next level and help build a program that will be good for years to come.”
Both Moore and Gordon speak highly of Segal and are excited to work with him this season and try to mold these players into Sectional champions.
