After the cold and dreary winter, the Titan track team took to the lanes and field areas to stretch their arms and legs at the first official meet of the year against North Posey on March 31.
The Titans set the tone early, gaining points in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with better starts and consistent speed, giving them the edge to win those events.
They were also able to win the 400-meter event due to Makade Malone’s strong finish that separated him from the rest of the people racing.
“I think we did a good job starting strong, making sure to give us a good lead with other events left in the meet,” sophomore Merexx Kuester said.
North Posey responded after these events, doing well on the team events like the relay, to try to prevent the Titans from running away with the win.
“I was surprised when they started to come back a little bit after the lead we took,” sophomore Jackson Fuhs said. “They did a good job battling back and not giving up.”
Two of the Vikings’ strongest events were the shot put and discus, where they tallied some more points. However, they could not come up with the win. Senior Bobby Robinson took top honors in shot put.
Relays were the highlight of the meet, with both teams doing very well – which resulted in close finishes.
“The relay was definitely the most fun to watch in the meet, with it being so close,” Kuester said.
This first meet of the year showed the coaches a lot about their teams this early in the season.
“This track meet gave us a good look at where we are at,” head coach Jeremy Aydt said.
The meet was not all perfect, though, with there being several things that the teams will work on in the coming weeks.
“We did really well, but there are definitely things that we could have done better, like some of our starts were weak,” Kuester said.
The Titans plan to build off of this start, though, working on different things to become even better as a team.
The meet ended with the Titans and Lady Titans both taking the wins. The boys team finished 77-33, and the girls won 93-20.
