Titans JV basketball falls short against Braves

The Gibson Southern boy’s junior Varsity faced off against the Tecumseh Braves on Friday, February 14. The Titans were coming off a five game win streak, and were hoping to build through the second half of their season.

“We tried to prevent them from scoring from the three point line early in the game,” head coach Mark Monroe said. “They had several scorers on their team, and we figured out pretty early that we needed to slow that down.”

The Titans came out slow only scoring a basket on one of their first five possessions in the game. After multiple slow possessions, the JV team’s defense outlasted the Braves. At the end of the first quarter, Gibson Southern was winning 11-6.

“We didn’t shoot as well as we usually do, especially from three,” sophomore Mason Yancey said. “Going into the second quarter we tried to get more inside shots to keep our lead.”

The Titans came out with a better mindset and a better gameplan. With a new game plan, including pushing the ball to get fastbreak points and running their various different plays. Gibson Southern slowly but surely stopped Tecumseh’s three point shooting, which proved to help going into the second half.

The JV squad outscored the Braves 12-10 in the second half. The score ending the first half was Gibson Southern 23, and Tecumseh 16.

“Going into the second half, we tried to come out and pack it in tight to stop their big men from scoring,” Monroe said.

The Titans followed through with the game plan, but it didn’t fix all their problems. The Braves took advantage of the lackadaisical defense of Gibson Southern with quick scoring in the beginning of the second half.

“Our defense in the beginning of the second half didn’t work as well as we wanted, and we tried to make some adjustments,” said sophomore Oliver Hamilton. “At the end of the game we ended the game coming up short.”

The Titans ended up losing the hard fought battle 41-38. Gibson Southern will play their next game on Monday, February 17 against the Central Bears.
