Gibson Southern defeats Pike Central in a close match

The boys junior varsity basketball team faced off against the Pike Central Chargers on Tuesday, February 19.

¨We figured they’d come out and play a zone to start the game,¨ head coach Mark Monroe said. ¨Our plan was just to attack the corners and try to get a few shots underneath the basket.¨

The first quarter was a battle for both teams, missing multiple shots both beneath the basket and behind the three point line. The defensive battle throughout the first proved to be working as both teams were held to low scoring.

At the end of the first the score was Pike Central 10, Gibson Southern 10.

¨Going into the second quarter, we tried to get our outside shooting going to hopefully help us gain a little bit of a lead heading into halftime,¨ sophomore forward Mason Yancey said.

The Titans got their scoring revamped in the second quarter, going on an 8 to 1 run to start the quarter. The Chargers battled on, as they are known to do bringing the score within three. The Titans, headed into the half, had regained the lead, making it Gibson Southern 25, Pike Central 18.

¨We tried to keep up the intensity, and keep everyone involved, both on the bench, and in the game,¨ sophomore Oliver Hamilton said. ¨Everyone brought effort and energy.¨

The Titans carried their first half play over to the second half, bringing their usual stellar three point shooting. The Chargers switched back to a man-to-man defense to slow the shooting threats of Ethan Spindler and Noah Bryant. At the end of the third, Gibson Southern had 43 while Pike Central had 36.

The fourth quarter proved to be much of the same Titan domination. The boys upped their defensive performance and fell back on offense. Pike Central battled back, but in the end it just was not enough. The final score was Gibson junior Varsity 49, Pike Central junior Varsity 44.

The Titans will play their next game on Friday, February 21 against the Wood Memorial Trojans at home.
