Senior singles player Jake Decker returns a volley earlier this tennis season against North Daviess.

The Titans went 5-0 against the Boonville Pioneers on the last home game of the season — senior night. Singles players senior Jake Decker, senior Eliott Church and junior Landon Kiesel each won their matches in two sets, as did the doubles teams consisting of sophomore Noah Kiesel and junior John Kiesel and seniors Wyatt Kruse and Ezra Pohl.

In the singles matches, Decker won his first set against Boonville’s Zane Montgomery 6-0 and his second set 6-1, holding Montgomery to a single point. Kiesel was victorious against Joe Moesner, holding him to one point. Church faced Pioneer Wyatt Harpenau. Church held his opponent scoreless.

In doubles action, brothers John and Noah Kiesel went up against Ben Vickers and Alex Vickers. The score of the first set was 6-0 and the second set was 6-2. Seniors Kruse and Pohl teamed up for the first time and earned the team another victory. Pioneers Zayden Schmitt and Mason Wall were held scoreless in the first set of the match and scored three points in the second.

“I gave two seniors a chance to play varsity and earn a varsity letter,” head coach Kyle DeBord said. “It was definitely a perfect storm of circumstances that allowed this to occur. This (every senior earning a varsity letter) has not happened in 15 years of coaching for me.”

Despite putting some different players on the court for the match, DeBord felt good about the team’s chances to pull off the win.

“I was confident in our team playing their best tennis,” DeBord said. “I was proud of how the team performed. Boonville is down this year, and it is sometimes challenging to continue to play at a high level against a weaker opponent.”
