In the lives of regular high school students, many are worried about how to spend their free time studying or hanging out with their friends. Senior Lucy Pohl spends her free time running a small, locally owned business. In January of 2025, Lucy opened her business, I Love Lucy’s. She decided to start her own business because she loves to work hard and wanted to have something creative on her own.
“I love small business, I am hardworking and I like to earn my own money,” Lucy said.
She has been well-supported by her grandparents throughout the course of opening her business.
“Just being there for her to bounce ideas off of and cheering her on,” Pat Pohl said.
Lucy has lots of products from which to choose. Some of her most popular items are her glass freshies, which are car air fresheners. She also sells personalised shirts and permanent jewelry that she puts on customers herself. When purchasing from the business, people can order online through her website or through her Facebook group. She also attends events with local vendors to grow her business. Lucy has pop-up events at other local businesses around town. Before she has an event, people can always find out about it on social media.
Lucy is in the process of getting together her mobile boutique with a trailer to attend events with her inventory. One of her biggest accomplishments with her businesses was being profitable early on with her investments.
She spends her free time working on orders, ordering shirts and preparing and arranging events. Time management is key for the beginning entrepreneur.
“I mainly work on school work at school, so I don’t have much to do after school,” Lucy said. She has had her business for about a year and has grown tremendously.
“She shared her dreams about owning her own business about a year and a half ago and has always had a passion for business,” Pat said.
When Lucy has faced challenging situations and decisions, she has always been reassured and remembered why she wanted this business from the start. One of her reasons to be a business owner is pleasing her customers and establishing herself as a trusted business woman.
“I have purchased from Lucy multiple times, including freshies, car fresheners and shirts,” customer Rachel Adamson said.
Lucy’s customers are always excited to purchase from her small business and enjoy working with a bubbly teenage girl.
“Lucy is dedicated to the community, providing a small business opportunity for customers to shop,” Adamson said.
Lucy plans to start expanding her business more with permanent jewelry and her mobile shop and is excited for the future.
“I’m excited to continue my business through college and see where it takes me,” Lucy said.
