The Lady Titan softball team started its season traveling to Tennessee during spring break. The girls have a tradition of playing in the Southern Warrior Classic at McKnight Park in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The first game of the tournament was against the Bloomington Central Catholic Saints. Junior pitcher Miley Sperling threw a complete game, not allowing a single run. Junior Emerson Walker led the team with two hits and an RBI. The Lady Titans took the win 4-0, starting their week 1-0.
The ladies started day two against the Bellbrook Eagles. Senior Carly Potts and freshman Gracie Bratton pitched, only giving up two runs. The girls’ defense was perfect with zero errors. Sophomore Lily Schmitt went 1-1 with three walks, had two RBI’s and a double. Sperling also went 2-2, with three RBIs and a home run.
“Our hitting seemed to be spot on, and our defense stayed on lockdown, which took away extra runs they could have scored,” Potts said.
Their next game later in the day was against Lauderdale County. Bratton and junior Brooklyn Turpin pitched for the Titans. Turpin secured the win and had two hits and an RBI. Potts led the team at the plate, going 3-4, hitting a home run and three RBIs. The Titans and Tigers both had two errors, but the Titans came out with the win, 11-6, to advance them to 3-0 in the tournament and complete the day.
They started day three facing off against Shoals Christian out of Alabama. Sperling and Potts were the game’s pitchers. Sperling earned herself another win. The girls had hot bats behind them, with junior Laney Scherer leading the team with two hits and two RBIs. Potts smoked another ball for her second home run of the tournament, and the Titans took an easy win, shutting out the Lady Flames 19-0.
The girls have the key to maintaining their composure when taking a commanding lead.
“Staying consistent and finishing the game when we are ahead,” Scherer said.
The Titans continued to dominate other teams in their fifth and sixth games, winning 16-0 over Cannon County and Adamsville, 16-3. Sperling clinched both wins as pitcher.
The Lady Titans faced the Summertown High School Lady Eagles in their last game, which was also the toughest opponent of the week. Sperling started in the circle, but coach Gary May rotated four pitchers throughout the game. After a six game winning streak, the Lady Titans fell 13-6.
The kick off to the softball season was a chance for the girls to see how well the off season treated them.
“It’s a fun game because the girls executed so many things we had focused on in winter workouts,” assistant coach Vicky Bratton said.
